What is Heart Disease?

Heart disease is a disorder of the blood vessels surrounding the heart than can lead to a heart attack or ultimately death. As we all know, a heart attack occurs when there is a blockage to an artery in, or near, the heart. This blockage prevents the heart from receiving proper nourishment. Heart disease is a serious condition that is thought to affect millions of people worldwide. It is a good idea to know your family history if you are worried about heart disease. More often than not if someone in your family has, or had, heart disease then you are a high risk. Understanding your risk as well as the warning signs can help you identify whether or not you have the condition. If you find that you do have, or are at risk for, heart disease then identifying it early will give you the best chance to manage it effectively.

There are a few things that you can do in order to avoid heart disease. The first one is controlling your blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause the blood to flow through your arteries at too quick of a pace. This fast pace can stretch the blood vessels beyond their natural limits and also cause small tears in them. When the body begins to repair these small tears there will usually be some scar tissue left over. The scar tissue traps plaque that can cause an obstruction to the blood vessel. Since a blockage will mean that less blood can get to your heart there is the chance that significant damage can occur not only to the heart but also to other vital organs.

Keeping your cholesterol in check is another thing that you can do in order to avoid heart disease. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood it can clog arteries which in turn will lead to heart disease. In order to keep your cholesterol under control it is a good idea to keep your weight at a normal level. Being overweight is often an indication that you are eating too many foods loaded with cholesterol. To that end, a healthy diet will decrease the amount of cholesterol in your body. This lower amount of cholesterol will help you avoid heart disease.

Understanding what you can do to avoid heart disease is very important. Be conscious of the things that cause this condition and do your very best to avoid them.
